Akshay played the titular role of a decorated naval officer facing murder allegations of his wife's lover in the 2016 blockbuster, which was supposedly inspired on the now-famous K.M Nanavati vs State of Maharashtra case. The film depicted the narrative of a defence personnel divided between his personal and professional lives, and Kumar did an outstanding job portraying the typical patriotic officer who puts his country above everything else. As a result of his outstanding performance in the film, Akshay was nominated for a National Award.

Akshay played Capt. Virat Bakshi in the top-secret intelligence wing of the Indian Army, who uncovers the conspiracy to bomb Mumbai by sleeper cell terrorists, in the official remake of AR Murugadoss' 2012 Tamil blockbuster Thuppaki. Akki was excellent in the role once again. Critics loved his performance, and the film went on to become one of the highest grossing films of its year.
